Read below to discover what qualities employees love the most about the top medical sales companies, and what things you should look for when interviewing!

Honest and trustworthy leaders

Year after year, employees share that they value honest and trustworthy leaders. According to our 2021 Best Places to Work report, more than half of employees (53%) are looking for this trait.

And in the last year, transparency has become more valuable than ever before. In fact, employees would rather their leaders be honest and transparent than have a positive attitude (only 17%).

Some of the ways leaders prove these qualities to employees include:

  • Transparency in company branding. Do they share both their strengths and weaknesses? What are their goals for the future?
  • Clear expectations. What exactly will your role be and what will they ask of you? Can you speak with current employees to get honest feedback?
  • Honest pay description. When do they share what compensation will look like? Is it fair and reasonable? Using resources like Glassdoor can help you see how one company’s salary compares to another.

Supportive teammates

Working with supportive co-workers is essential to a positive company culture. According to the 2021 Best Places to Work survey, sales reps report that they value having a teammate who is willing to help others (64%) over how skilled they are (25%).

The last year presented sales teams with new barriers to communication and collaboration. Most companies had to shift to a remote work environment. And while some are starting to ease back into the office, others have gone remote for good.

Throughout this transition — and any other changes the future may bring — it’s invaluable to have co-workers you can depend on. If you’re looking to join a top company, you need to find one that values supportive team members.

Some ways leaders foster a supportive team include:

  • Team bonding. What does the company do to make employees feel like part of the team? Are extracurriculars offered or encouraged to help teammates form relationships?
  • Group or partner work. Are projects always completed independently? Or does leadership assign group tasks?
  • Cultural sensitivity training. Are employees trained on how to work with those who are different from them? Does the environment encourage inclusivity?

Work-life balance

With the shift to a remote (or hybrid) workforce, work-life balance has never been more important to sales reps than right now. Sales roles have always been flexible, but reps had to face new challenges because of the COVID-19 pandemic. As clients became less accessible, sales reps had to get more creative with their sales strategies.

Pay attention to the companies that offer resources to help reps balance these unique obstacles to meet sales goals and prevent burnout. It’s a good sign they care about their employees’ well-being when they’re at work and at home.

Some ways employers support work-life balance for sales reps include:

  • Parental leave and assistance. Is paid leave offered? Top rated medical sales companies are most likely to offer paid paternity leave, adoption assistance, and on-site day care, according to our 2021 survey.
  • – Time off and PTO. How is PTO handled? The survey also found that top companies offer time-off benefits such as flex time and unlimited PTO.

Employee recognition

Timely and regular recognition from leaders and peers is a huge contributor to employee satisfaction. Naturally, people want all their hard work to be noticed and appreciated.

But how do employees actually want to receive that recognition? We found that medical sales reps care most about fair compensation (80%) and the ability to be promoted (60%). As a job seeker, salary and career growth opportunities should be at the top of your list, too.

Some ways sales reps receive recognition include:

  • Benefits. According to our 2020 Medical Sales Salary report, top companies offer benefits such as travel reimbursement (car allowance or gas card). Some even provide pet insurance.
  • – Professional mentorship programs. Our 2021 Best Places to Work survey found that 40% of sales reps agree mentorship is an important aspect of job growth. However, the previously mentioned salary report reveals that only 10% of companies offer a professional mentor. If your prospective employer doesn’t provide this benefit, what do they do instead to help their employees grow?
  • – Tuition reimbursement. If interested in furthering your education, will the company help pay expenses?

Reputable and valuable product

According to the reps who responded to the 2021 Best Places to Work survey, top medical sales companies offer a solid product line. Sales reps also value companies that focus on innovation, research, and development.

In order to reach sales goals, reps need to believe in the product they are selling. The best medical sales companies pay careful attention to creating products that are essential and have a positive impact.

Some ways employers show sales reps the value in their products include:

  • Adequate product training. Are employees taught the ins and outs of the products that they’re expected to be experts on? Is there an established training schedule?
  • Honest conversations. Do the employers accept feedback on their products? What is the protocol for new ideas or improvements? These are great questions to bring up in later interview rounds.

Opportunities to make an impact

It’s no surprise that this year’s respondents found it especially rewarding to have a positive impact on both patients and healthcare providers. In fact, the majority (32%) of sales reps in the 2021 Best Places to Work survey said the best part of working in medical sales is being able to make a difference!

As a sales rep, it’s important to feel like you’re part of a company and a culture that betters the world.

Some ways top companies help employees make an impact include:

  • Community service opportunities. Does the company encourage participation in community service events? How do they give back to those in need? Checking out the company’s social media page could give you insight on what they value.
  • Reactions to current events. What accommodations were made for employees during the COVID-19 pandemic? The more they support their employees, the better you can support your clients.
  • Sustainability. What does the company do to help create a more sustainable environment? Are there measures in place to help everyone cut back on their economic footprint?
