There are two main medical sales rep styles: hunters and farmers.
Hunters are the medical sales reps who are often considered the go-getters. Their goal is to close as many deals as possible, and preferably the high-dollar accounts. With a strong desire to win, fierce independence, and never-ending initiative, this sales style is often stereotyped as ideal.
However, the farmer personality should never be discounted.
Medical sales reps who fall under the farmer category are patient and nurturing. They take client objections as an opportunity to understand their pain points. From there, they develop long-lasting relationships. These medical sales reps aren’t in it for personal glory. They focus more on collaboration to do what’s best for their customers.
Of course, it’s important to have a healthy mixture of all these traits. However, it’s also important to understand your innate, natural traits so that you can use them to your advantage during the job search and in the field.
