Entry-Level Medical Sales Salaries Broken Down Into 5 Categories

Starting a career journey in medical sales is an exciting time. It can also be intimidating. Many job seekers fear a lack of experience will hold them back from starting on a successful path. Really, we’ve all heard about the numerous years of experience reps have and how their earning potential goes up exponentially as they get 10 or more years under their belts.

However, there’s not much discussion on entry-level medical sales salaries. Of course, most of them aren’t as impressive as the six-figure salaries more experienced reps earn. But with determination and the right opportunity, you have the potential to earn more than most entry-level roles.

In fact, medical sales reps with less than two years of experience earn $95,057 in average total compensation. While their commissions are nearly half of what reps with two-to-five years of experience earn, the starting average base salary is $66,793.

To help you understand the potential your future holds, we broke down entry-level medical sales salaries by individual categories. Here’s what you need to know:

Surgical sales

Total average compensation with less than two years of experience: $82,337

What you’ll sell: In this role, reps spend their time in an OR setting selling surgical products. Surgical sales reps discuss product features with customers and align those features with their current needs. It’s also critical to negotiate both price and service agreements.

What you’ll earn: With just six-to-10 years of experience, surgical sales reps earn an average of $167,900 including commissions. Reps with less than two years of experience still see an impressive total average compensation, thanks to a potential $53,210 base salary and $29,127 in commission.

Pharmaceutical sales

What you’ll earn: The top earners have 20+ years of experience with an average total compensation reaching $171,542. As a less experienced rep, you have the potential to start with a $67,563 base salary and $20,090 in commissions, according to our respondents.

Medical equipment sales

Biotech sales

What you’ll sell: Biotechnology is a specialized field in which biochemists, geneticists, and other scientists develop medicines and other products. Many consider biotech sales reps to be specialized pharmaceutical reps.

This year, reps with less than two years of experience earn the most when working in biotech sales. The monumental earning potential stems from the impressive $103,300 in average base salaries.

Of course, there are many variables impacting even entry-level medical sales salaries. Employer size, market segments, and travel all determine the amount you can make in the medical sales field.
