Pharmaceutical sales representative

One of the most common top pharmaceutical industry jobs is a pharmaceutical sales representative. The role of a rep comes in many shapes and sizes. You could be in a full-time or flex role, depending on the type of commitment you’re looking for from a company. 

No matter who you’re selling to or where, every pharmaceutical rep is required to comply with all FDA, AMA, PhRMA, and HIPAA and Safety guidelines as they make daily sales calls to help customers meet the needs of their patients. 

Qualifications

Most pharmaceutical sales reps hold a Bachelor’s degree, and roles require at least two years of previous experience in sales. More entry-level roles allow your experiences to be in any sales field, not just direct pharmaceutical experience. 

You must also reside in the territory listed in the job description or be willing to relocate as you’ll be traveling to offices and clinics in a specific region. 

If you don’t already possess knowledge of the medical, healthcare, or pharmaceutical sales industries, you need a strong desire and ability to learn quickly. The more knowledge you have regarding the industry and products, the higher your chances of successfully passing that information to doctors and other medical professionals. 

Specialized pharmaceutical sales representative 

Specialty pharmaceutical sales reps provide services to a narrower range of specialists trained in a specific field. Selling these unique products requires a deeper understanding of the medical field, including medical concepts, conditions, and pharmacology.

Qualifications

The need for increased product and medical understanding requires specialty pharmaceutical sales reps to have a bit more experience. Along with a four-year BA or BS degree, reps landing these roles need at least 3 or more years of experience selling specialty pharmaceuticals. 

Their experiences, however, must be documented and proven with a track record of success, such as stack ranking, awards, and commendations. 

Pharmaceutical sales manager

Sales managers are a step up the corporate ladder from sales reps. They oversee a specific territory and the success of all reps. As leaders, sales managers set the tone, pace, and vision for their teams. Pharmaceutical companies expect them to inspire success and strategize creative plans to solve customer, team, and individual sales rep challenges. 

Qualifications

Direct experience and proven success is a must when considering a pharmaceutical sales manager role. While a BA or BS is of course required, most companies prefer an advanced degree and 10 or more years of relevant experience, including pharmaceutical, life sciences, or other commercial sales. 

Aside from proven success in sales, managerial candidates must demonstrate their ability to coach and lead a diverse team of reps. 

Branding and marketing roles

Not all of the top pharmaceutical industry jobs are direct sales or leadership positions. There are also roles that fall into the branding and marketing category, allowing you to work from a remote location or in the office. Branding and marketing roles focus on various areas of the business, such as launching new products, marketing to consumers, creating brand awareness, and even designing educational materials. 

Qualifications

The requirements for marketing and branding roles are very specific to the job title. However, unless specified as entry-level or junior, these roles require a minimum of five years of experience and a bachelor’s degree or higher. 

Since marketing and branding roles are so specific in educating customers and patients or even planning a launch for a new product, they often require direct business experience in the pharmaceutical or medical industry.
