Medical device giant Medtronic debuts mobile app for remote patient monitoring

Jun 29, 2011 01:51 PM
As medical equipment makers become more reliant on electronic mobile devices, industry giant Medtronic is launching an iPhone application that will allow doctors to monitor patients who have the company's implanted cardiac defibrillator.

The app is a remote version of its existing Carelink software, which is used to help provide key information directly to the physician from a patient's mobile device.

Dr. Suneet Mittal, director of electrophysiology at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, said that the new advances in telemedicine allow doctors to triage clinical events and take immediate action when necessary.

"Using this new application I can more easily download CareLink information to a smart phone or view this information on my iPad, helping me to respond quicker to clinical events and provide more proactive patient care, which, as a health care provider, is my ultimate goal," Mittal added.

The launch comes as the company is facing scrutiny over a recent article in The Spine Journal which implies that previous articles about Medtronic's Infuse spinal graft did not disclose potential serious side effects. Analyst Tao Levy said that the article is likely to hurt the company's medical devices sales, which are currently about $800 million a year.
